Playlist and Response for Mon. 2/27

Hi, dudes. For Monday, please add THREE more songs to your playlist. They can be from either genre, or a mix of the two.

For EACH SONG, please write 100 words DESCRIBING the song based on THREE OR MORE of the different "ingredients" for the song experience that we discussed in class this week. Here are some of the ingredients that we identified:

-Narrative (story)
-Description
-Protagonist/Narrator/Audience
-Rhythm or beat
-Instrumentation
-Pacing
-Repetition
-Vocal performance
-Outside references
-Cultural context
-Artist's identity
-Images or motifs

ALL you have to do right now is describe your three songs. You do not need to worry about coming to a larger conclusion about the songs.  We are building up to that, as you might have guessed.

Put all of this in a blog entry, along with the title and artist for each song.

Have fun!

Thurs. 2-23 In-class Reading: "There Goes the Neighborhood..."

Hey, folks! Today we'll read "There Goes the Neighborhood: Hip Hop Creepin' on a Come up at the U" by Kermit E. Campbell . Enjoy!

SICK DAY ACTIVITY 2-13-17

Hi, friends,
Sorry for the late notice, but I am super sick and cannot come in today. Class is cancelled. Please see below an activity to do for your attendence today. Complete this activity and post it on you blog by midnight to receive attendence credit for today.
See you Wed!
Anna

Sick day! Instead of coming to class, please go ahead and add two more songs to your playlist. Please write 100 words for each song, focusing on WHAT THAT SONG MEANS TO YOU. Again, focus now on your personal relationship to the song, rather than on you listening experience.
Have fun and see you on Wed!

Research Short due Mon. 2-13: The Full Treatment

Hi, friends! For your Research Short this weekend, please go to Jstor.org and find an article related to music, listening, rap music, or country music that interests you. Remember that you can also add additional keywords in "Advanced Search" to refine your result based on other issues as well.

Read your article from top to bottom. If you don't understand it, read it again.

Then, please give it the "full treatment" in a blog post, following these steps:

1. Write a formal precis of the article.

2. Divide the article into logical sections, and write a sentence summarizing what each section is doing.

3.Make a list of the five most important words in the article.

4. Make a list of THREE QUESTIONS that this article evokes for you.

5. Offer a 100-word 'talk back' to the article: Find something in the article (the main point, a smaller idea, or even the writer's thought or research process) that you either agree with, disagree with, kind of agree with, or kind of disagree with. Explain your thinking on this.

Post all of this, along with the article's title and hyperlink, to your blog.

Have fun!

Writing Program Online Survey (extra credit opportunity)

Hi, friends,

The Writing Program asks students to take a CONFIDENTIAL survey at the beginning and end of each semester so that we can gather data about how student writing develops. We are looking for TRENDS and PATTERNS in what students say about their writing processes-- NOT for information about specific students.

You'll get an email receipt once you've completed the survey-- please forward it to me, and I will give you an extra credit homework grade as a thank-you for helping us gather this data.

Thanks in advance!
Anna

Playlist and Response Due Monday 2/6

Hi, friends! For this weekend’s playlist, I’d like for you to select your own two songs, one rap and one country, and write an “immediate apprehension” response of 100 words and a “synoptic comprehension” response of 100 words for each song. So—that’s 200 words per song, in separate paragraphs for the different modes of listening.

Choose songs that you find cool/interesting. Do please choose one from each of our two genres of focus.

Please post the song titles (and artist) on your blog along with the responses. You don’t have to embed them in the post if you don’t want to.

Can’t wait to listen to your picks!

Article and Songs for 2-1-17: "Listening to Music..."

Hi, friends! Today we'll read and discuss the short article, "Listening to Music: What is an Ideal Hearing", by Marilyn Fischer.

If we have time, we'll then listen to two relatively current songs, "May We All", by Florida Georgia Line, and "Finish Line" by Chance the Rapper. We'll use these songs as a way of practicing "reading" and responding to music as text. If we don't get to it together, we'll get to it on Thursday. Looking forward to it!
